Pastor Alex Tan was on a morning walk at Cotton Tree Beach earlier this month when he noticed the creature.
Mr Tan said the creature stumped him.
“I thought it was a three-metre flatty or something but as I got closer, it looked like a cross between a dog, a possum, a kangaroo and some sort of giant rat,” Mr Tan told 7NEWS.com.au.
The animal, which appeared hairless and was in a state of decomposition, appeared to have human-like hands.
The creature’s skull was exposed but its body and tail appeared mostly intact.
“Maybe something had come along and had a little nibble of it,” Mr Tan added.
“I just think it’s some sort of deformed possum.”
Intrigued by the animal, Mr Tan now wants to get to the bottom of what the creature is.
He’s so determined he’s willing to put a chicken parmi on the line for anyone who can prove him wrong about it being a possum.
Mr Tan is also trying to get the attention of Robert and Bindi Irwin, who may be able to help identify “little buddy”.
“I’m pretty certain it’s not an alien,” he added.
Mr Tan said the creature had been removed when he went back to the beach later that day.
Queensland Museum Collection Manager Heather Janetzki said they confirmed the animal was a brushtail possum.
